PAP Women’s Wing calls for improved gender diversity, better policies for caregivers in workplace

Singapore still lags behind our neighbours when it comes to gender diversity in the work force, according to the recent Singapore Diversity Report.

It reveals that eight out of 10 companies have all-male boards and only 8% of board directors are women, compared to 9% in Hong Kong and 11% in Indonesia.

At the People’s Action Party’s Women’s Wing (WW) annual conference held on Jan. 8, WW chairperson and minister in the Prime Minister’s office Grace Fu, said that women play a critical role in filling the human capital gap in an ageing population and hinted how effective implementation of the Fair Employment Framework would ensure less discrimination against women in the workplace.

Ms. Fu emphasized the importance of a professional environment and social infrastructure that empowered women to continue serving traditional caregiver roles to children and the elderly, whilst remaining in the workforce.

She also suggested an increased number of child and eldercare facilities, as well as family-friendly human resource policies, to facilitate this.

At the conference, the WW released a position paper on issues in the area of employment, healthcare, housing and social support affecting senior citizens, including ways to tackle them.
