It was a scene of panic at an Ang Mo Kio hawker centre on Tuesday, after an unknown flaming cylindrical object was thrown into Kebun Baru Food Centre. Lianhe Wanbao reported that more than 50 police officers responded to the incident, cordoning off an area the size of a football field for six hours.
Stall owners were busy prepping for dinner crowd when they heard a loud sound. Witnesses claimed they saw the missile-like item tossed into the hawker centre from 50m away by an unidentified individual.
According to Lianhe Wanbao, one hawker spotted a flaming ball of light zooming towards his stall and grabbed a metal hook from the fruit stall to bat it off. After it landed under a table and exploded, the flaming object was put out by two hawkers with a fire extinguisher.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force was notified of the incident at Blk 226 along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 at 4:40pm. It dispatched a fire engine to the scene, but the blaze was extinguished before it arrived.
The Straits Times noted that no one was injured and no one has been arrested yet. The case has been classified as mischief by fire, and investigations are ongoing.
