Singapore’s largest gas provider is offering rebates to eligible hawkers to help them through the long-drawn-out pandemic.
Each hawker will receive monthly rebates worth up to S$100 (US$74) now through December under the initiative, which City Gas said will cost more than S$1 million. A total of 2,602 are said to benefit from this, according to its announcement today.
“Hawkers in Singapore have been hit hard by the pandemic, and it is more important than ever to support them now,” CEO Perry Ong said in a statement. “We are at a turning point for the hawker trade and for our nation, which is why City Gas feels we must do our part to help our local culinary heroes and preserve our local food heritage.”
The rebates will be directly reflected in gas bills and no action will be required from the hawkers. Among those benefiting from this is Anthony Low of Xin Sheng Ngoh Hiong Prawn
Cracker at Boon Lay Place Food Village and a father and son duo helming Quan Ji at Amoy Street Food Centre l, where they sell an assortment of Chinese dishes.
“It is a simple way to put an extra S$400 in our pockets during this difficult period,” Low was quoted as saying in the media release.
“Any assistance to decrease overheads during this period and help sustain our business is greatly appreciated,” said father-and-son hawkers Siew Sew Meng and Siew Peng Yin.
