Over 1.2k cartons of contraband cigarettes and 135kg of chewing tobacco seized at Tuas

In a joint operation with the Singapore Customs, the Immigration Checkpoints Authority uncovered 1,205 cartons of contraband cigarettes and 135kg of chewing tobacco in a smuggle attempt by a Malaysian bus driver.

On Feb 14, just a little after 6am, a Malaysia-registered bus driven by a 33-year-old male Malaysian was directed for further checks by the ICA at Tuas Checkpoint. During the inspection, officers found stacks upon stacks of duty-unpaid cigarettes and tobacco concealed within modified compartments of the bus.

The duty and taxes of the illegal haul amounted to about $133,820 for the cigarettes and $11,820 for the chewing tobacco. The driver and the seized exhibits were handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigations.
