The crowds of Singapore tend to adore any event or festival that’s remotely cool or unique. So it was to no one’s surprise at all that the first edition of our Taiwan-inspired Shilin Night Market over the weekend was packed to the brim. Of course, the first day was the worst, because people just had to be there to capture it all on social media. People were queueing to get in, rain or shine, and playing the waiting game again to get food.
With the long lines, the unrelenting heat, the rain showers, and the sticky humidity, those of us not present probably didn’t feel like we missed out on much.
Sure brings back memories nightmares of the first Bangkok-imported Artbox Singapore in 2017, when attendees swarmed Marina Bayfront to the extent that there was no space to breathe, much less walk. Interestingly, both events were organized by Invade, folks who sure know how to pump up the trendy festival-deprived folk of Singapore.
But hey, if you’d like to give it another chance, turn up this weekend for more Taiwan street snacks, carnival games, food, and music performances. And if you feel at home among the crowds, head to Jewel Changi Airport to mingle with the throngs of people there.
