What was at first a joyous moment for the 500 participants of an orientation camp organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) turned out to be a nightmare after one of the undergrad helpers dove head first into the sea at Pahlawan Beach, Sentosa and struck his head on a hard object.

The 22-year-old, second-year student was playing a game in the water with fellow schoolmates on Aug. 3 when the incident, which has left him paralysed from the chest down, happened.

NUS has granted him one year off his studies to recover and doctors are positive he will be able to walk again.
