Props to the National University of Singapore (NUS) for holding on to its title of the best university in Asia, according to the latest Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings released today. It’s the second year in the running that NUS has clinched the honor, after it leaped past the University of Tokyo to take top spot last year.
However, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) struggled to maintain its joint-second ranking with China’s Peking University and dropped to fourth place this year. Peking University solidified its second place ranking, followed by fellow Chinese school Tsinghua University, which rose two spots from last year to settle in at third place. Despite NTU’s overall score improvement, the two Chinese universities put up tough competition that was hard to beat.
Also making it to the top 10 list after NTU were the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology.
A total of 300 universities from 24 countries in Asia were judged in this year’s rankings. Japan had the most number of top universities in Asia with 69 institutions, followed by China with 54 and India with 33. The rankings assess each university’s capabilities in five categories: teaching, research, citation, industry income and international outlook.
