NUS researchers are working on a synthesiser that can simulate the four tastes — bitter, salty, sour and sweet — on your tongue. At the moment, the digital simulator can only reproduce tastes, but the team plans to add smell and texture, too.
Other than revolutionising the presentation of TV programs like cooking shows, as well as video games, this Singapore-developed technology is also expected to have offer some healthcare applications.
Head researcher Nimesha Ranasinghe has revealed that diabetes and cancer patients may use the devise to simulate sensations lost during treatment or as a result of their illness.
