Once again, The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) proved their mettle on the world’s academic stage. Both Singaporean institutions managed to raise their standings in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

NUS held on strong to its status as Asia’s top university for the third year in a row and climbed two notches higher to #22, tying with Canada’s University of Toronto. NTU also rose two spots and is now placed at the #52 spot in the world.

Both colleges have seen themselves moving upwards in the rankings since 2012, noted The Straits Times, with NTU in particular leaping a total of 122 places since 2010-11. Of course, it’ll be quite a while till either are able to tackle the top echelons of the list. The University of Oxford reigns as the top college in the world for the second year running, followed by the University of Cambridge (#2), California Institute of Technology (#3), Stanford University (#3) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#5).

Times Higher Education also highlighted the continued rise of China, home to two institutions in the top 30 — Peking University and Tsinghua University.

“The Beijing duo now outrank several prestigious institutions in Europe and the US,” it wrote. “Meanwhile, almost all Chinese universities have improved, signalling that the country’s commitments to investment has bolstered results year-on-year.”

The publication’s university league table uses indicators such as research volume, influence, international outlook and learning environments to score each institution.
