Following investigations carried out by supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice, the claim in a widely-shared clip about how a locally manufactured chin chow product was allegedly made of plastic has proved to be completely baseless.

In case you haven’t kept up with the latest happenings in the world of grass jelly, a Facebook user uploaded a video online showing what appeared to be a dry, flaky black substance — purportedly chin chow bought from FairPrice. It’s actually supposed to have a smooth, jelly-like consistency, but the uploader claimed that it was ‘made of plastic’.

The clip, however, starts off with the substance already dished on a plate, and it’s unverified whether the suspicious ‘chin chow‘ actually came from the packaging.

The viral video prompted an investigation by the supermarket, which contacted chin chow manufacturer, Tan Soon Mui.

“It has been clarified that this claim is false, and we understand that the manufacturer has made a police report over the post,” NTUC FairPrice wrote in an update.

They added that checks on existing batches haven’t revealed any abnormalities, while Tan Soon Mui stated that freezing and thawing of the product could affect the texture and consistency of the grass jelly.

Attempts to reach out to the video uploader have so far failed to elicit any response, they said.

The supermarket went on to advise the public against circulating unverified information that “may cause unnecessary public alarm”, and requested people to be mindful of information derived from social media.
