Engineering students from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) will deploy their NTU Venture 8 — Singapore’s first 3D-printed urban solar electric car — in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon Asia.
Mounted on carbon fiber single shell chassis, the vehicle possesses an innovative 3D-printed body shell containing 150 parts, and will race in the Urban Concept Caregory.
“We are extremely proud to have designed and assembled a 3D printed body shell for the electric car, which is Singapore’s first and probably Asia’s first 3D-printed concept car,” remarked Associate Professor Ng Heong Wah. “The 3D printed car body was pushing existing technology to the limits and we are so pleased that it has paid off.”
Another team of NTU engineering students have developed the NTU Venture 9, a sleek three-wheeled racer capable of taking on sharp corners without losing much speed due to it’s motorcyle-esque tilting ability.
The Shell competition seeks to challenge students to design, build and drive a vehicle that can travel the furthest distance using the least amount of technology.
