NSP’s Cheo Chai Chen severs all appeal with female voters in a single comment

A National Solidarity Party (NSP) candidate just shot himself in the foot (mouth, hand, thigh, torso, neck as well) when he took aim at Macpherson SMC opponent Tin Pei Ling by stating that she can’t possibly be a strong politician just because she’s a new mom.

Possibly not going for the female gender demo, 64-year-old Cheo Chai Chen told TODAY that voters should just let Tin “go home and rest, and take care of her child”. The People’s Action Party (PAP)’s incumbent gave birth to a baby boy early last month, just weeks before the start of the election season.

Let’s hear exactly what Cheo had to say about his 31-year-old opponent:

“In general, mothers love their children, so they spend a lot of time with them. If voters choose her, she might focus more on her child than on her voters. This is her weakness.”

One step forward for his own confidence; a hundred steps back for the NSP. It’s actually pretty ironic also to know that fellow high-profile NSP member Kevryn Lim is a single mother to a two-year-old son.

Tin has rebutted Cheo’s statements in a Facebook post that was both very classy and appealing to all her female voters.

Cheo also had some choice words to say about his other opponent fighting for the Macpherson SMC seat — Workers’ Party (WP)’s Bernard Chen.

“My Workers’ Party opponent is inexperienced, and I will work hard to get the support of voters,” he remarked.

To be fair, Cheo does have significantly more experience as a politician than his competitors. He served as a Member of Parliament for Nee Soon Central from 1991 to 1997 under the Singapore Democratic Party.

Whatever the case, the NSP’s continuous appearance in controversial headlines this year ain’t helping them at all.
