Now you can bid to upgrade your economy class seats on SIA — but only if you’re invited

Before you take off on your holiday, watch out for any email invitations from Singapore Airlines asking if you’d like to bid for a seat upgrade from Economy Class to Premium Economy. Selected passengers will receive the email seven days before they’re due to depart, and each flight will have a minimum and maximum bid value. Bids must be in dollars and lie within the range allowed, but can be amended or cancelled 50 hours before departure. Successful applicants will get an email notification 40 hours before the plane takes off, and only then will they be charged.

It’s tough to say who will be invited and who won’t, because according to SIA’s website, “invitations are made at Singapore Airlines’ sole discretion based on certain criteria and combination of factors, which are dynamic”. Yeah, that pretty much doesn’t explain anything at all.

The mySQupgrade scheme will eventually apply to other classes of travel, but SIA isn’t the first to implement this. Similar initiatives are currently offered by Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and more.
