No, Uber did not put up an ad at MRT stations telling people to hitch a ride when trains break down

Given the spate of recent train breakdowns on the North-South Line, frustrated netizens have been spreading around this image that seems to depict Uber making fun of SMRT’s constant breakdowns — in an advertisement for its services. One that’s placed at a station platform, even.

FAKE.

As far as advertisements go, that jibe is a tad harsh — and silly on SMRT’s part to approve something that attacks itself. But turns out, it’s fake news.

Uber has confirmed that the ad circulating online is a spoof, and it had nothing do at all with it. In truth, it’s very much happy to complement public transit instead of getting commuters off it entirely.

SMRT reposted Uber’s clarification on Facebook, expressing disappointment over the spoof.

“The ad circulating online is in bad taste and it’s not funny especially to our people who are working so hard 24/7,” it wrote.
