No new Zika cases reported for the first time since beginning of outbreak

For the first time since the beginning of the outbreak, there were no reports of any new Zika cases on Tuesday.

The total tally however remains worrisome at 333 infected patients — a number that was attained on Monday. High as it may be, but it’s always good news that the amount of cases have stopped rising for now.

Since Aug 27, the Ministry of Health reported daily discoveries of new Zika patients, including eight pregnant women. A majority of the cases were from the original Zika clusters of Aljunied, Sims Drive and Paya Lebar Way.

While most people experience mild symptoms, Zika infections in pregnant women have been shown to cause microcephaly, a severe birth defect in which the head and brain are undersized. In adults, it can cause a rare neurological syndrome called Guillain-Barre.

The National Environment Agency continues their vector control operations and outreach efforts in the seven existing Zika hotspots: Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive/Paya Lebar Way/Kallang Way/Circuit Road/Geylang East Central/Geylang East Avenue 1; Bedok North Avenue 2/Bedok North Avenue 3/Bedok North Street 3; Joo Seng Road; Bishan Street 12; Elite Terrace; Ubi Crescent; and Jalan Raya/Circuit Road.
