Popular marching tune “Purple Light” commonly sung by National Servicemen in Singapore has been banned by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) after it’s been brought to light the song lyrics violate the organisation’s values and are degrading to women.
Part of the song goes like this:
“Booking out, see my girlfriend
Saw her with another man
Kill the man, rape my girlfriend
With my rifle and my buddy and me.”
In a statement posted on Facebook, women’s rights group AWARE Singapore raised their concerns to MINDEF and the SAF over the fact that NSmen are bonding through misogynist lyrics about committing sexual violence against women.
The song was banned and AWARE has since commended the authorities for responding well to their feedback.
