Even a harmless water gun that looks like the real deal will land you in trouble.
Importing toy guns into Singapore is subject to the approval of authorities, and any gun which looks too realistic will not be approved. Modified toy guns should only be kept at home solely for display purposes and should not be waved around in public places as these could trigger unnecessary alarm.
One concern is the “threat of intimidation” from wannabe criminals wanting to stage a robbery, former police officer Mr Sukhmindar Singh told Channel NewsAsia. “Even if it is a replica, if it is intimidating, would you want to take a chance?”
Mr James Quek, who sells modified toy guns in the AIM Spec Tactical Concept Store on Beach Road, pointed out the growing popularity of customising toy guns and has recently started workshops teaching people how to do so. Toying with guns is no child’s play, as it can cost more than $1,000 to modify a gun, but that has not deterred keen hobbyists.
But think twice before you go all badass and whip out that modified NERF gun which looks like an AK-47.
