New dads to get up to two months of leave within their baby’s first year

Dads, don’t think the government forgot about you. Fathers of Singaporean citizen babies born from Jan 1, 2017 will be getting their paternity leave increased to two weeks, while shared parental leave will be extended to four weeks.

According to Senior Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office Josephine Teo, the government will be footing the bill for all enhancements to the paternity and shared parental leave. Father will be able to take up to two months of leave within their new child’s first year, including all the childcare leave and unpaid infant care leave.

“We have timed this round of leave enhancements to give employers some time to adjust and plan,” said Teo in Parliament today. “We hope employers that are in a position to do so, start to extend paternity leave even before legislation kicks in so that parents of children born earlier can also benefit.”

Mothers obviously get more days off for their maternity leave — and the benefits now apply to unwed mothers as well.
