Singapore’s Minister for Transport Mr. Lui Tuck Yew on Friday, June 27, that an additional station will be built between Yishun and Sembawang on the North-South Line.
The station number NS12 will be named Canberra, after the capital city of Australia. There’s already a park in the area bearing the same name.
According to the Canberra Times, the move follows a successful trade mission including 40 Canberra business people and Treasurer Andrew Barr, and a sustained push to raise awareness of the city as a tourism and investment destination. It is said that Barr had toured sections of the MRT office on his visit to Singapore, including its state-of-the-art control centre and massive equipment warehouse.
Said Mr. Lui at the ground-breaking ceremony for the 30km Thomson Line, which is expected to provide for more than 400,000 commuters living and working in its vicinity, the construction of Canberra is the result of a feasibility study that lasted about a year.
He also revealed that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will provide more information on the new station on a later date.
