The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is seeking to establish a temporary bill to alllow police officers to exercise more power in the recently proclaimed Little India area.
The bill, which will last for up to a year, will state the area as a special zone under the Public Order (Preservation) Act — sale, supply and consumption of alcohol is generally prohibited except for certain businesses and under specific conditions.
Accordingly, police officers will be able to inspect and interview anyone suspected of carrying alcohol. Those who threaten public order may also be banned from entering the special zone.
Any businesses found to be in breach of the law will have their licence taken away or suspended swiftly.
More details of the bill will be announced at the second reading.
