Netizens react with scorn to news of national servicemen getting discounts at 300 hawkers and retailers

So yesterday, the People’s Association (PA) announced that national servicemen will receive discounts for organized courses and the use of sports facilities at community clubs (CCs) and water-venture outlets, as well as F&B outlets again this year. All in “recognition of the contributions” by NSmen, of course.

All this on top of gym entry or membership discounts at PA’s eight gyms, located at places like Ulu Pandan, Serangoon, Potong Pasir, Henderson, Queenstown, Tampines West, Ayer Rajah, and Dover CCs.

As if that’s not enough, from July onwards, 300 hawkers and retailers in the heartlands will also slash the prices of their products for national servicemen — that’s quite a hike from 160 vendors last year. However, to enjoy all these great goodies, national servicemen are required to either show their 11-B identification card (if they haven’t lost it yet) or, er, wear their uniforms.

Unfortunately, the online crowd wasn’t too pleased with all these discounts — even though Singaporeans usually love a good deal. Some claimed the benefits should be greater, some boldly asked for free public transport, some scoffed at the notion of squeezing into their old uniforms just to save a couple bucks, while others wondered about the impact of the price markdown on hawkers.

Take a gander at the comments below.

Then there was this guy, who took the opportunity to shoot for the moon, hoping he’d at least land among the stars.
