Though this clip from Mediacorp reality series Designer In The House was released in early February, folks have been recently sharing a clip from an episode… out of pure bewilderment.

Some context first: Designer In The House is a show on Channel 5 that connects couples with interior professionals who help transform their abodes into dream spaces. For the episode in subject, the newlyweds’ BTO flat admittedly did look pretty after extensive renovations, but folks were proper shook after finding out that the minimalist interior design works racked up a total of S$95,000, which was way over the couple’s budget of S$60,000. Not so minimal after all.

Not to mention that there were considerable delays in getting everything done — the couple only got their keys back after 16 weeks of renovation, even though the initial timeline was 10 weeks.

Probably the best part of it all was when the interior designer revealed the total cost of everything at the 3:33 mark. The husband jokingly said that he wasn’t willing to cough up the cash, but you could probably tell that he was kinda serious.

Netizens didn’t waste any time in expressing confusion at how such a basic-looking home could cost S$95,000. Presumably, that super-high fee was inclusive of all the furnishings, installations, and appliances, because if it wasn’t, the homeowners would probably have to fork out over S$100,000 for everything. As a comparison, the average cost of renovating a 4-room HDB flat is around $55,000, according to ValuePenguin.

Good luck guys, and have fun paying that back for the next couple of decades.

Someone then pointed out that this is nothing new — Designer In The House has a reputation for bringing on board interior designers who seem to delight in exceeding the budgets of their clients.

  1. What the fuzz abt this guy and his renovation house ?
In a modern world , there is willing seller and a willing buyer , if u never ask for this packages, then u will not feel cheated in the first place.

  2. So expensive…. I only spend less than 40K for my 5 room flat…. already include everything…. should be called “maximalist” not “minimalist”….
