Netflix acquires Singapore-made independent drama series ‘Perfect Girl’

Netflix is on an aggressive hunt to rapidly expand its library of exclusives and originals, and one Singapore production has unlocked the achievement of joining the streaming giant’s roster.

Operating on a barebone budget of $1,000, Jason Chan managed to make rom-com Perfect Girl. Featuring himself as the main actor (as well as running writing and directorial duties) and Khaleila Hisham as his romantic interest, the 10-part web series is a tale of two high-school crushes bumping into each other after 10 years apart.

Low-budget it may be (Chan had to edit and compose the music himself), but the series’ premise held enough promise to nab five awards in various festivals. It’s now up on Netflix as a full 67-minute-long feature if you want to check it out. Ratings haven’t been that positive (1-and-a-half stars right now), but ehhh, it doesn’t hurt to find out why Netflix thinks it’s a must-buy show.
