Motorists frustrated by dangerous and inconsiderate behaviour on Singapore roads

As if the phenomenally high cost of owning and driving a car in this country weren’t annoying enough, drivers here have been found to be especially frustrated by dangerous and inconsiderate behaviour of their fellow motorists.

A study by AIG Singapore revealed that 77 percent of the 800 respondents are displeased about driving conditions in Singapore — to the point that 53 percent reported feeling stressed on the roads.

The rise in impatient and reckless driving was said to correspond with Traffic Police data, which displayed that the number of speeding violations increased by 6.5 percent from 2013 to 2014. Cases of fatal accidents involving speeding also increased by 39 in the same period.

The study found that the top three causes of irritation for Singaporean drivers were reckless driving, drivers changing lanes without signalling, and driver not allowing other to change lanes.

Apparently, younger drivers were found to be more likely to be dangerous drivers too — 63 percent of motorists aged 18 to 35 admitted to being unsafe on the roads. Actions such as accelerating when traffic lights turn amber and being distracted by other activities during driving count among their risky behaviour.

Its not surprising then that drivers of the 18 to 35 age group made the highest number of auto claims out of all age groups, and are often fully or partially to blame for the accidents.
