More fire safety inspections during the festive season

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has announced that it will be stepping up inspections on fire safety violations at commercial buildings expected to gain a lot of human traffic this festive season.

According to Channel NewsAsia, the SCDF conducted over 600 inspections in the first 11 months of the year at commercial premises such as hotels, shopping centres and public entertainment outlets.

The SCDF also did a surprise check in the Harbourfront area on Dec. 13 — where it discovered 14 fire safety violations at three locations.

VivoCity’s carpark had apparently been illegally converted into storage spaces, while a St. James’ Power Station had built a dressing room without approval.

Anyone who found disregarding fire safety requirements may be subjected to a fine of up to SGD10,000 or sentenced to imprisonment for up to six months, or both, under the Fire Safety Act.

Major offences like the commencement of fire safety works without plan approval can carry a fine of up to SGD200,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

Those who wish to report a fire safety hazard can do so by calling 1800-280-0000 or emailing SCDF_Fire_Safety_Feedback@scdf.gov.sg.
