The National Environment Agency (NEA) will be conducting more inspections on restaurants and caterers to ensure food safety in light of the coming Lunar New Year.
According to Channel NewsAsia, NEA’s inspections over Christmas, New Year and the days following up to the Lunar New Year have increased 27 percent as compared to the previous year.
Hygiene lapses on the part of food retailers have also decreased as a result of the inspections — 2,198 enforcement tickets were issued this year, as compared to 2,947 in 2012.
Offences most common include the failure to keep licensed premises clean and free from pests and the failure to register of food handlers.
