Monday morning rainstorms bring about flash floods and high flood risk spots across Singapore

Quite a storm we’re having this gloomy Monday (well, more than usual) eh? The weather forecasters at Meteorological Service Singapore meant business last week when they said that we were up for a very stormy end-January — and the proof is in the puddle that got our socks drenched this rainy morning.

Puddles, however, seem to be an understatement. The rainstorm — which started last night — has already caused at least two flash floods in the city, while various other parts of the country are at high risk of flooding.

According to the Public Utilities Board (PUB), a flash flood affected the traffic junction between Craig Road and Tanjong Pagar Road, while another one affected Maxwell Road. Both weren’t serious enough to render traffic impassable, and have since subsided anyway. Areas such as Bishan Road, Yio Chu Kang Road, Tiong Bahru Road, Prince Philip Avenue and Tanjong Penjuru were warned by PUB to be locations of high flood risk when water levels rose above 90 percent in canals.

To be honest, any weather that doesn’t cause us to perspire profusely as usual in the Singapore heat is pretty much welcome in our books. The heavy rain is expected to continue till lunchtime, so bundle up while you still can.
