MOH finds traces of bacteria in raw fish samples

The widely circulated message that claims consumption of raw fish causes bacteria infection seems to be true after all.

Following an increase in Group B Streptococcus (GBS) cases, the Ministry of Health (MOH) launched an investigation into the link between raw fish and GBS.  Some GBS patients also told Channel NewsAsia after consuming yusheng, their joints swelled to the point where they required surgery.

Authorities had pointed out earlier that there is no proven link between the consumption of raw fish and GBS disease in healthy humans, but interim analysis of MOH’s investigation on a limited number of identified cases revealed a link between eating raw fish and GBS infections. However, authorities said that more cases will need to studied for a more definite conclusion.

The National Environmental Agency (NEA) has advised licensed food stall holders to temporarily halt the sales of raw fish dishes as a precautionary measure, and they will also be reminded to comply with high standards of food handling practices to prevent cross contamination and bacterial growth.
