MOE proposes for privately-run UniSIM to become Singapore’s sixth autonomous university

SIM University, otherwise known as UniSIM, could very well become Singapore’s sixth autonomous university and be fully funded by the government. The other five are the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and Singapore Institute of Technology.

This proposal by the Ministry of Education is in the works for the privately-run university, said Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung at UniSIM’s convocation ceremony this morning.

MOE talked it over with the university’s board of trustees and the governing council of the Singapore Institute of Management, and everyone agreed this would be the ‘positive and logical next step in the development of UniSIM,’ said Ong. But the proposal has to be brought forward at a general meeting of SIM members before final action is taken.

As an autonomous university, UniSIM will focus on applied learning in the area of social sciences, which includes social work, psychology, early childhood education and law, among others.
