With 2017 coming to a close, search engine giants and almighty Based God of the internet Google has released Singapore’s Year in Search, revealing the top trending topics that had Singaporeans Googling for answers.
But we’re talking about the internet here, and unlike Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s initial vision when he invented the World Wide Web, the internet’s true purpose is to, of course, spread dank memes. Though the meme cycle is ever-churning each day, Google found that Singapore’s dankest meme for 2017 is “Mocking Spongebob” — the image macro that has SpongeBob Squarepants in an ugly bent pose, mocking one’s statement.
The runner-up is none other than “You’ve heard of the Elf on the Shelf, now get ready for”. We’ll just let you figure out what it is.
Other close competitors include the likes of Roll Safe (the guy-tapping-head-meme) in third place, the United Airlines Passenger Removal (which is probably more horrible than hilarious) in fourth place and Salt Bae (the overly dramatic salt-sprinkling Turkish chef) in fifth.

Disappointingly, Big Shaq’s brilliant “Man’s Not Hot” is at eighth place, even though it really should be higher, while it’s a horrifying sight to see the cancerous Baby Shark Dance even make it to Singapore’s top trending memes of the year.
