With a series of employment contracts being rejected due to low salaries lately, it seems to be that the mandatory monthly pay for Filipino maids here have increased.
The Straits Times reports that although no official announcement from the Philippines’ side have been made, employment agents here believe so. Especially since the Indonesian Embassy informed them that the minimum salary for Indonesian maids must be $550 a month.
An agreement made by the Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore) and the Philippine Embassy three years ago stipulated that the minimum salary for Filipino maids have to be set at S$500. The benchmark was made according to the minimum salary for maids set by the Philippine government — US$400.
With the US dollar strengthening now, the increase in minimum salary is only logical.
Employment agencies here have already expected the rise in wages for Filipino nationals, considering the appreciation of the US dollar and the Indonesian Embassy’s move. One agency has already informed employers to anticipate making the adjustments.
