Migrant workers who rescued trapped toddler bestowed with Public Spiritedness award by SCDF

“Your act of bravery is truly an inspiration,” said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) of the two foreign workers who thought nothing of rescuing the toddler who was hanging mid-air with her head stuck in between the railings of a window yesterday afternoon. They were awarded the SCDF Public Spiritedness Award today.

You must have already seen the video of that heroic man climbing up to the second floor of an HBD block to rescue a baby…

Chennai native Subramaniam Shanmuganathan and his co-worker Ponnan Muthukumar managed to climb up onto the ledge of a second-storey HDB flat and free the three-year-old girl before SCDF personnel arrived at the block along Jurong East Street 32.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, SCDF noted that no visible injuries were seen on the child, except for some redness on her face. The parents however have refused to send her to the hospital. They’ve been receiving flak online for leaving their daughter alone and unattended in the house — the mother only expected to be out for five to 10 minutes to send her older daughter to school.
