Presumably pissed over the recent spate of Singaporeans making total fools of themselves overseas, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issued a travel notice that sternly asks citizens to behave when they’re out and about.
Though the ministry assures that they’ll render all the help they can to locals arrested and detained overseas, they won’t be able to intervene in the law enforcement and judicial workings of another country. Even worse — the judicial process could take months in some countries.
To avoid such complications, MFA request Singaporeans “exercise due care and personal responsibility when travelling overseas, including respecting and abiding by local laws and regulations.”
The Ministry didn’t point out exactly which recent cases prompted them to issue the travel notice, but their highlighting of drug-related offences may be referencing the arrests of two Singapore citizens in Bali. In September, local DJ Muhammad Faliq Bin Nordin was apprehended for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs via postal service. Earlier this month, a flight attendant believed to be working for Singapore Airlines (SIA) was nabbed for allegedly bringing meth and ecstasy with him into Bali.
