Are departmental stores headed towards a slow extinction in Singapore? After 12 long years serving the people of Sengkang, Metro will be pulling down its shutters for good at Compass Point this August.
Though the exact date hasn’t been announced yet, the departmental store has already started conducting a clearance sale at Metro Sengkang, with offers of up to 70 percent off selected items.
Metro’s management have indicated that they would not be renewing their lease at Compass Point when it expires in August, and remarked to Channel NewsAsia that opening new stores — in Sengkang or anywhere else — would depend on available opportunities and finding a suitable location with just the right conditions.
The closure of the outlet in Sengkang would mean that only four remain in Singapore — in Paragon Shopping Centre, Causeway Point, City Square Mall and Centrepoint.
