Meth the drug of choice for new abusers in Singapore

A drug situation report for the first half of 2014 released by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) reveals that methamphetamine or ‘Ice’, is the most commonly abused drug among new abusers here.

With 67 percent of the total drug abusers arrested for using methamphetamine, other drugs such as heroin and cannabis take up 15 percent and 13 percent respectively.

The estimated street value of the total drugs seized in the first half of this year was approximately $4.71 million – a sharp 50 percent drop from statistics of January to June 2013. Although overall seizures of methamphetamine saw a decrease of 62 percent, from 22.49kg to 8.65kg, seizures of the drug specifically for the local market increased by 10 percent, from 4.82kg to 5.30kg.

In an effort to instill awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, Preventive Drug Education (PDE) maintains as the key strategy to CNB’s anti-drug approach. CNB has been working with shopkeepers to help eliminate the sales of drugs and giving school assembly talks to educate the younger generation.
