Merlions to undergo cleaning for five days, nation’s economy may be thrown into chaos

Singapore’s most iconic statues in the heart of the Civic District are due for their annual clean-up this month, ruining the plans of tourists who’ve travelled from far and wide to Singapore just to witness a glorious scene: a colorless effigy of an outlandish lion/fish hybrid spewing water back into the river.

The two Merlion statues of the Merlion Park at One Fullerton will cease their vomiting from Jan 23 to Jan 28, says the Singapore Tourism Board, and will be boarded up while the cleaning operation takes place. It will be a truly dark five days for the nation — a symbol of mysticality, majesty and fluid regurgitation will be closed to the eyes of the world.
