MDA orders takedown of local cannabis awareness website

The Media Development Authority (MDA) has ordered the takedown of the Singapore Cannabis Awareness website (sg.cannabis.org).

Jointly run by founder Mike and writer Shiwen Yap, the website ran stories, both internally written as well as extracted from publications, justifying the use of marijuana especially for medical purposes, in society.

On Feb. 14, Mike wrote a letter to citizen feedback site The Real Singapore, revealing that the MDA had accused the website of breaching the internet code of practice. The authority had suggested that the Singapore Cannabis Awareness website was promoting ‘prohibited material’ to Singapore internet users and ordered the website to be taken down by Feb. 19.

On Feb. 15, Mike and Yap announced they’re conducting a total review of the website so as to ensure it meets the internet code of practice, and unpublishing it temporarily.

The post, which was made on their Facebook page — it has over 2,000 Likes to date — also read, “the domain will stay on and the website will online again ASAP after the review”.
