For the first time in Singapore, the Restroom Association of Singapore (yes, it exists) has given out six-star ratings for a handful of public restrooms in the country. It’s official — six toilets at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands are now the best spots in the country to go do number one and number two (and more).

An award introduced by the Restroom Association in 2014, it took another four years for them to find toilets worthy enough for the glorious six stars. To be fair, the honor does involve quite a bit of lofty prerequisites, such as the adoption of technology to increase efficiency and having cleaning attendants that are officially qualified in washroom cleaning. On top of basic stuff such as being odor-free and, you know, having toilets and taps that actually work.

The six restrooms at the MBS mall achieved all that through smart tech such as inbuilt sensors that can track the level of ammonia and visitor volumes. Should odor levels hit above a certain level, a text message will be sent to cleaners, who can respond quickly to clean up the affected toilets and re-up hand soaps or toilet paper as needed. The toilets also come with screens where patrons can rate the quality and provide real-time feedback for the cleaner in charge to take action.

For those who aren’t always in the vicinity of MBS to take a leak/dump, take comfort in the fact that there are 350 other restrooms in the central district that come close with five-star ratings each.

Here are some of the highly acclaimed restrooms in the city to relieve yourselves in, according to the highest lavatory authority in the land. We’ll leave out government offices and hospitals because the former isn’t exactly open for public use and the latter is for patients, so be considerate, people.

  • The Gallerie Foodcourt, Marina Square, #04-101/102
  • National Library, 100 Victoria Street
  • City Square Mall, 180 Kitchener Road, B2 – Level 9
  • Tiong Bahru Plaza, 302 Tiong Bahru Road, B1 – Level 6 (except level 4)
  • Valley Point Mall, 491 River Valley Road
  • Palais Renaissance, 390, Orchard Road, B1-Level 3
  • Sentosa Beach Station, 33 Allanbroke Road, Sentosa
  • Republic Plaza, 9 Raffles Place

Huh, that’s weird — we were pretty sure the public restrooms at ION Orchard, The Paragon, and Mandarin Gallery were pretty top-notch too, but they don’t appear in the Restroom Association of Singapore’s Happy Toilet Listing. Nonetheless, it should be obvious to note that the more uppity the establishment is, the higher the chances are for the loos to be pretty swanky.
