Massive blaze at Jurong Island when oil storage tank caught fire; SCDF on site

A supermassive blaze broke out this afternoon at Jurong Island, where an oil storage tank at 23 Tembusu Road caught fire.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were called in on an “Oil Tank Fire” at about 3pm, dispatching multiple resources at the scene. The cause of fire is unclear, but from the video that’s quickly spreading on Whatsapp, you can see the tank buckle and fold from the intense heat

According to the SCDF, the fire involved a tank containing light crude oil measuring about 40m in diameter and 20m in height. By the time they arrived, the in-house emergency response team were already fighting the blaze using ground water monitors.

It’s gonna be long night for the firefighters, as they’re currently using foam to mitigate the blaze, while also using water from ground monitors and fixed drencher systems to cool down two other oil tanks situated nearby.

A total of five fire engines, three red rhinos, an ambulance and 29 support vehicles comprising approximately 150 SCDF personnel are involved in the ongoing firefighting operation. During the course of the battle, a member of the in-house Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) was conveyed to National University Hospital due to heat exhaustion.

As of 8pm, SCDF seems to have extinguished the flames, and are conducting damping down operations to prevent fire from rekindling.

More updates to come.
