It isn’t surprising that Marine Parade’s self-supervising cleaner Moktar achieved overnight fame on social media. After all, Marine Parade is the stronghold of Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who strongly swears by the mantra of “ownself check ownself”. This cannot be a coincidence, right?
So it turns out that good ol’ Moktar is actually a cleaning supervisor who was assigned as a cleaner to that one particular block by himself. He does report to a site manager who oversees his work — so in the end, ownself doesn’t check ownself. Marine Parade Town Council has since clarified why Moktar was listed as both cleaner and cleaning supervisor in a Facebook post.
But some disbelieving netizens suspect the site manager could well be Moktar too, or that the post was written by Moktar himself.

Others were suspicious or unimpressed, questioning the intentions of the PR spin to cover up something else.

Concerned netizens were also left wondering if he was being paid properly for holding two appointments.
