Sorry, Singapore Sports Hub; the Marina Bay Floating Platform will now (and probably forever) be the primary venue for all National Day Parades in the future.

At the NS50 dinner reception last night, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that the venue will be renamed NS Square as a tribute to National Service, Channel NewsAsia reported. There’ll be added features such as a gallery to showcase the NS journey, and an extension built to open up space and seating capacity.

“Its permanence and prominence in Marina Bay will reflect the central role National Service plays in our lives,” PM Lee said, adding that the revamped venue can also be used to host community events such as art performances and pop-up markets.

The floating platform, built in 2007, was only meant to be a temporary stage for NDPs until the National Stadium was reconstructed. Over the years, however, the Marina Bay spot actually made for a nicer view, with the Singapore river and the CBD skyline forming the backdrop for the festivities.
