Man succumbs to burn injuries sustained during essential oil diffuser explosion

In an unexpectedly tragic turn of events, 35-year-old engineer Mohd Rizalludin Hassan succumbed to his burn injuries, sustained during an explosion.

Nobody would have expected it — the explosion occured while he was setting up an aromatherapy diffuser. The blast set his whole body ablaze, according to The New Paper.

On the night of Oct 13, the father of four went to his bathroom to prepare the diffuser, as was his nightly routine since the hazy days started. His wife, mother-in-law and children suddenly heard a loud bang from the bathroom — Rizalludin ran out, his body covered in flames.

In the frenzy, he screamed in pain and jumped on and off the bed as his wife and mother-in-law got over their initial shock and smothered the flames with a blanket. Their maid ran outside the flat and called for help.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to the incident around 9.55pm and conveyed the man to National University Hospital with burn injuries. He was later on transferred to Singapore General Hospital, where he was warded in the Intensive Care Unit for nine days.

On Oct 22, he passed away when his his blood pressure dropped and conditioned worsened.

His wife told The New Paper that they had bought two 5-litre plastic containers of essential oil after seeing a promotion online, which came together with a free aromatherapy diffuser. They kept the containers in the master bedrooms’ bathroom, where the accident took place.

The last thing that he whispered to his wife while waiting for the ambulance was ‘sorry’. Tragic.
