Suffering from substance use disorder as well as symptoms of psychosis and repression, a man inflicted harm upon himself and others before threatening to blow everybody up to kingdom come.

39-year-old Lay Chew Long has since been convicted for causing grievous hurt by means of an instrument likely to cause death, as well as criminal intimidation, according to The Straits Times

The man had been living with his parents in a flat in Yishun, which was also rented out to three women from China.

Unfortunately, the three tenants had to bear witness to Lay’s violent episode in the morning of March 23. He used a 22cm-long knife to stab himself repeatedly in the chest and neck before calling the police to admit that he was committing suicide.

He then forced himself into the room of the tenants, demanding that they hand over their mobile phones so they wouldn’t be able to call the cops. Lay also threatened to “detonate a bomb inside the flat” — he would fill up the flat with LPG gas and set off a flame if they tried to do anything “funny”.

Lay then stabbed one of the tenants in her neck in a show of determination before leaving the room.

The situation was defused when Lay’s uncle came by the house and disarmed him. Lay later received treatment at the hospital for his multiple self-inflicted stab wounds to his neck and eight stab wounds to his chest.

The injured tenant survived the traumatic incident, fortunately. She was treated for the 1.5cm stab wound on the left side of her neck, of which she was given a total of 92 days of medical leave. She is now unable to carry heavy objects with her left hand for long periods.

Lay will face sentencing on Dec 15.
