How did a man manage to ride his motorbike into the arrival hall of Changi Airport Terminal 2?

A man got himself arrested at Changi Airport yesterday afternoon when he rode his motorcycle into the basement of Terminal 2’s arrival hall, stopping right outside the staircase that leads to McDonald’s.

In case you weren’t aware, this McDonald’s outlet is not a drive-through.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, the police said, and the man was arrested under the Mental Health Act. So that should tell you the state of his mind when he carried out the barking mad stunt.

Pictures taken yesterday showed a 400CC Honda Super Four motorbike neatly parked in front of McDonald’s, with surrounding folks looking more bemused than alarmed at the situation. A video captured a man — presumably the motorcyclist — acting oddly while surrounded by police officers.

But the more serious implication here is the fact that someone managed to get past all the tight security and ride an actual motorcycle into one of the busiest air travel hubs in the world. The world’s best airport is expected to have some tough measures to prevent this very security lapse from happening, and the breach can only be blamed on oversight. It’s only fortunate that the arrested man did not hold a more malicious intent when he rode into the hall — things could have gotten a lot grimmer otherwise.
