Man let off with stern warning for flying drone in restricted area on National Day

Just because SingPost are using drones to send mail to Pulau Ubin, doesn’t mean that everyone gets an easy pass to playing with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) too.

A 27-year-old man just received a stern warning by the police for operating his personal UAV in the vicinity of War Memorial Park, which had been marked out as a Special Event Area on National Day. That means it’s a strict no-no to fly drones there.

It was about 8.20pm on National Day that police spotted the drone flying without a permit in the Special Event Area, which had been used to take aerial photographs of fireworks during the parade.

After consulting the Attorney-General’s Chambers (shit got serious) the man was let off with a stern warning instead of being prosecuted. He could have been fined up to $20,000 and/or imprisoned for up to a year.

The trending tech toy has been causing lawmakers to go in a tizzy as they scrambled to formulate regulations on personal drones. Hobbyists are advised to refer to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore website for more details on operating their UAVs in Singapore.
