Deliriously high on drugs, 26-year-old Eric Leong Teck Wai sped along Hillview Avenue at midnight back in October 2013, uncaring about the dangers it posed to the passengers inside his car, including his girlfriend.
The midnight joyride obviously had to end horribly. Leong lost control of his car and swerved right into a tree. A passenger was flung out of the car through a broken windscreen, but escaped with fractures. Leong survived the accident, but was left wheelchair-bound.
The only fatality was his 23-year-old girlfriend Cheryl Ng Hui Ling — who was sitting in the front passenger seat. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
Channel NewsAsia reports that Leong has since been sentenced to serve two years and nine months in jail for the string of offences he committed back in 2013.
It was revealed that he had been driving under the influence of drugs, including the illegal sedative-hypnotic drug called phenazapam. He had been driving at 20km/h over the speed limit too.
Aside from his lethal joyride, he was also facing one count of theft in dwelling and another count of using a 15-year-old student to commit harassment for a loanshark. With the help of an accomplice, Leong even stole around $6,750 worth of birds, cages, a laptop and cash from a shop at Tanjong Katong Road.
Leong’s lawyer argued that his client has “mild mental retardation” and was easily susceptible to suggestion — he was swayed by his accomplice to carry out the theft and unlicensed moneylending offences.
