A car exploded at a multi-storey carpark in Bukit Batok yesterday evening, leaving a man with burns on his chest and limbs.

The Straits Times reports that the police were alerted to a “loud explosion” that was heard at Block 290H along Bukit Batok Street 24 around 6.28pm. A picture of the aftermath showed car doors blasted open and bent into twisted metal, while the engine itself seemed to have remained intact.

Police stated that portable butane gas canisters were found at the scene. Other sources revealed that the car was a hybrid vehicle that used compressed natural gas (CNG).

A video circulating online shows passersby and police officers tending to the victim, who displayed clear signs of trauma and burns from the explosion, with his clothes in tatters.

Talk on Twitter alleged that the victim was an ex-convict who had rented the car under a ride-sharing partnership and remained uncontactable to the car’s owner. The claims, however, are unverified.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion are underway.
