Police were led on a merry chase on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) yesterday morning — a chase that ended up with cops running after a barefoot suspect in Woodlands.

The Straits Times reported that a traffic police officer first spotted a 35-year-old man using his mobile phone while driving around 8am along the BKE. The driver, however, refused to comply with the cop’s instructions to stop, speeding off to Seletar Expressway before stopping at Block 335 along Woodlands Street 32.

Even then, the man refused to surrender. Lianhe Wanbao reported that he starting fleeing barefoot (for some reason), and was eventually caught by the police. Still, he continued to struggle against the arrest and even injured a 31-year-old traffic police officer in the kerfuffle.

Cops soon found out why the man tried to head for the hills — his vehicle had been transporting contraband cigarettes, and he had been bound for Woodlands Checkpoint with the illegal wares.

The injured cop was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for minor injuries, while the driver was arrested for traffic and custom-related offenses.

Smuggling 101, guys: If you’re trying to break big laws, make sure you’re not breaking “little” ones that get you noticed.
