The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) recently wrapped up (poor choice of words, sorry) two cases involving cruelty towards cats. One man got a hefty $6,000 fine, while a lady received a lesser $3,000 fine.
Li Xiaoming, 30, was convicted for animal cruelty — he had used masking tape to wrap the entire body of a stray cat. AVA was alerted to the taped-up cat, which was found at Ubi Avenue 1 in February earlier this year, and conducted investigations.
After Li’s identity was established, he admitted to the crime, claiming that he taped up the stray cat after it entered and urinated in his residence. He now has to fork out $6,000 for his inhumane act.
Don’t worry though, the cat did not sustain any physical injuries from the incident — it simply had to be anaesthetized briefly before all the masking tape could be removed. The cat has since been rehomed.
In a separate case, 32-year-old Noorfazanah Bte Abdul Salam was fined $3,000 for abandoning her cat at Sumang Walk on Nov 22 last year. Investigations revealed that she had gone to the vet to treat her cat, but was unable to afford the treatment. She then left the mixed breed cat in a pet carrier at Sumang Walk.
Fortunately, the cat was found by a member of the public and it got the urgent veterinary attention it needed. It has been successfully rehomed as well.
