When it comes to internet pranks and scams, it’s always the older generation that fall for ‘em, be it Nigerian email scams, love scams, malware and more.
Seems like these folks are even falling for harmless larks like posting links redirecting clickers to their own Facebook page. One was so affected by the prank that he actually lodged a police report, believing that he was personally accused of breaking into a random house.
The hilarious misunderstanding started when Drayson Lim made a joke post on Facebook yesterday. Accompanying an image of a smashed up door lock was a tale of woe, with Lim stating that his house in Sengkang was broken into. Fortunately, the robber left behind his phone, and Lim managed to deduce the culprit’s identity from accessing the Facebook profile. He put up a link to the accused’s page which, if clicked, redirects you to your own profile. Ha-ha, cue laugh track, cue rimshot.
Alas, the joke flew so very high above Christopher Pereira’s head. The man was so upset that he was somehow framed — totally unaware that the link directs everyone to their own Facebook page. Pereira was so confused about the joke that he marched into Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre and made a police report against Lim. We’ll reproduce the details below without edits for maximum merriment.
“On 23.08.2018 at about 0030hrs, I was sitting at the Macdonald Blk 113 Aljunied Avenue 2 to have my supper. Subsequently, I then browsing my Facebook and one male Chinese Drayson Lim had post a photo of a door damaged and stating ‘To that person who entered my house at Sengkang last night knowing that I was gone and stole our valuables, I wanna tell you this, you left your fucking phone on the table!!!! Now I know who you are, I got into your Facebook profile and saw your face!!!
You have 24 hours to bring back all the things you took from my house and repair the door, or I will report to police!! Meanwhile, I left the link of your profile so everyone knows who you are.’
I wish to state that he had also share a link. When I opened the link and it shows my Facebook profile. I then commented the post and told him that he got the wrong person however he did not reply to me. I would like further state that I did not know the said person and wish to state that yesterday I was at home all the way.”
Yeap, this man did *not* get the joke. Pereira even advised others who were hit by Lim’s false “accusation” to report immediately to the police.
So, so many people tried to tell the man that it’s a joke.
Pereira eventually wised up and realized that he fell hard for the trick. Props to him for using his brief moment in the viral spotlight to promote the fact that he makes sculpted figurines of politicians.
